the day after christmas

1.

Why do I feel obligated to write on this blog?

Every time I feel like starting a draft, the urge almost always comes from a place of obligation. I have to blog because that’s what bloggers do. I have to write because otherwise I will forget. I have to make the most out of this paid domain, because what’s the point of having my own dot-com if people see nothing but shining shimmering cobwebs whenever they land on my page?

2.

It’s just not as fun for me to blog anymore. Back when I was most active on this blog, not much was happening outside of work and school, and most of my hobbies could be done in front of a computer. These days I do stuff that require a little bit more going out and about in the world. Life is a lot more exhausting now, I must say, but also, in some ways, life is also a lot more fun.

3.

Still, I feel obligated to blog. Maybe it’s because I’m paying for a dot-com. Maybe it’s because I feel a sense of obligation towards the friends that I have made over the years in this dusty basement of the internet. Or maybe, maybe it’s because every now and then, no matter how interesting and amusing and appealing “real life” can be, there’s always a deep, deep desire in me to talk to myself while pretending that I’m talking to a small group of imaginary friends, and call it blogging.

4.

I started watching For All Mankind just before Christmas. I was sold when my friend K explained to me the premise: it’s about an alternate history in which the Soviets landed on the moon first instead of the Americans. I got through the first six episodes before I stopped. I might get back to it another time. It’s good though; just a bit too serious and long (an hour-ish per episode) for what I’m looking for at the moment.

5.

I really, really liked Stumptown. I watched it a while back, maybe early summer this year, and I was bummed that it only had one season. It’s about a military veteran who becomes a private investigator, and it’s set in Portland, hence the title. I want to go to Portland one day. Maybe next year.

6.

L reco’d me the YouTube channel Future Proof. I liked their video on zero-waste because I was old enough to witness the boom of the zero-waste movement in the 2010s. Remember back in the day when everyone and their mother was adamant that metal straws would reverse climate change and save the world? Good times, haha.

I have metal straws too, by the way, so calm your minimalist tits if you feel “very attacked right now” (Estranja 2014).

7.

I still haven’t thought about the next year. What my goals are, what habits I want to gain or get rid of — ya, I dunno. It’s not like I normally plan these things anyway. Just something I haven’t done yet, I guess.

8.

The photo up top is from the day before Christmas. It’s a wee bit too warm for a white Christmas over on this side of the world, and no, I do not think plastic straws are to blame.
