comfort room, soft drinks, and other filipinisms

I’ve lived in Canada long enough to feel personally betrayed by the tariffs that the US had impose upon this land of polite, overly apologetic people. I’ve also lived here long enough to become an englishera (halata? char).

Jokes aside, I’ve been here for so long that I now think and speak mostly in English. I don’t have the fluency of a native speaker, but I no longer need to translate the words in my head as I speak.

I’ve also been here long enough to realize that some English words that make perfect sense back in the Philippines don’t quite land the same way here. I talked more about these Filipinisms in my audio log (my longest to date!).

I got sick a few days after I recorded the audio log, so I didn’t have time to post it on Sunday. I was also supposed to go to the states this week, but I ended up taking a sick day and staying in bed instead. I was so nervous about crossing the border, but I guess the universe had a different plan for me.

Anyway, I hope y’all are staying safe and sound. Happy Tuesday!

  1. Sorry to hear you were ill. I hope you are feeling better today.
I’m sorry my stupid government is making issues for our Canadian neighbors.
Funny audio. No matter where you go, there are nuances as to how people speak etc.

  2. I randomly decided to Google ‘sunday currently’ posts and your blog/post was one of the first ones. I read it and I thought, “very pinoy vibes”. Then I saw this post and I was like, “sabi na nga ba e” hahahaha

      1. Oo nga no? Yung palsukon ay para sa apoy, kandila, o gasera. Pero yun na rin kahit sa light bulb. Hehe.
