Shuffle the Music

I couldn’t bring myself to write a proper post so I’m doing another tag that I found via the search bar. This time I’m supposed to shuffle my music library and comment on the first 15 songs that come up.

I couldn’t bring myself to write a nicer intro or a better transition either so, um, voila:

Tokyo – Lianne La Havas

Love these lines: “all I’ve ever known is / how to be alone / it comes naturally.” Sometimes it bothers me how comfortable I am with being alone — a self-fulfilling prophecy, correct?

Beautiful Girl – Jose Mari Chan

Mama explained this song to me when I was a kid and was way too young to understand English. Maybe this is why I never really had a problem with the phrase “love at first sight.”

Drunk On Your Love – Kate Torralba

I don’t remember how I discovered Kate Torralba, but I do remember being confused when I found out that she made (still makes?) music. She’s the same girl with the enchanted bracelets, ya?

Umaapaw – Ang Bandang Shirley

Umaapaw’s intro always, always gets me. And it starts with a meet cute, too!

Foolish Heart – Nina

Another one of those ‘childhood’ songs that I’d always hope to show up on Myx (Your Choice? Your Music).

I GOT A BOY – Girl’s Generation

Luh, nasa library ko ‘to?

Ikaw Lang ang Aking Mahal – Brownman Revival

Despite all the shit they got for being reggae hacks during the heyday of pogi/pangit rock, Brownman Revival’s songs are still bomb. Ngayong Gabi has got to be one of my favorite Brownman tracks.

Your Song – Elton John

I first heard this song through M who had a huge obsession on Cameron Mitchell and his Your Song cover. Classic lines: “I hope you don’t mind / I hope you don’t mind / that I put down in words / how wonderful life is / while you’re in the world.”

We Will Become Silhouettes – The Postal Service

I miss this band! I used to have a Death-Cab-slash-Postal-Service phase in college — ahh, good times.

This Guy’s In Love With You Pare – Parokya ni Edgar

This one’s from high school. I never understood the lines “ang tawag niya sa mommy ko ay tita / bakit ba ‘di pa n’on nakita?” How is that indicative (or considered [stereo]typical) of being bading?

Go Slow – HAIM

I love the entire Days Are Gone album. Never really cared for HAIM’s later releases though.

Ligaya – Eraserheads

From the ‘Heads debut album, which apparently is being re-recorded according to rAdish.

May I Have This Dance – Meadowlark

This song is cheesy, but it’s my kind of cheesy. Ultra girly vocals are my thing, and the lines “May I say something crazy? / I love you” — ang corny pero ang ganda hahaha.

Listen to the Man – George Ezra

V introduced me to George Ezra’s music because he used to have a big, big crush on Georgie (close?). And Magneto is in the music video! Cutie.

Say You Love Me – Jessie Ware

The first Jessie Ware song that I listened to was Valentine, a collab with Sampha. Valentine is heaps better than Say You Love Me, for sure, but the latter isn’t bad either.

And obviously I’m crazy about love songs, ‘no? Reminds me of Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity, whose main character Rob uttered one of literature’s best soliloquies:

“What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?”

Now let me just go grab some ice cream.
