free writing on a tuesday evening

In part due to poor planning, I do not have a prepared post for tonight.

To make sure I still meet my self-imposed blogging deadline, I am going to free-write until I hit 500 words or so.

I learned about “free writing” in high school. Free writing is basically writing with absolute abandon – of structure, of grammar, of everything. You just write whatever comes to mind and not give a damn whether the words are good or correct or whatever.

(A beat.)

Last month I tried reading a play but I didn’t finish it. I think I got busy? Or maybe the play just wasn’t sticky enough for my headspace at that time. I dunno. I forgot. I was reminded of the play because I wrote “(A beat.)” above. That’s a playwriting thing, I think. I also learned about that in high school.

Who knows if the things I learned way, way back – and I mean waaaaay, way back – are still correct today. Things change, don’t they? Things, opinions – even facts could change. Pluto used to be a planet, didn’t it?

Anyway, let’s pivot.

Recently I’ve been listening a lot to Hayley Williams’ Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party. I love 80 to 90 percent of the tracks, and I am pretty sure if I give the remaining 1o to 20 percent ample attention, I would love them too. My current favorite track is “Mirtazapine.” What a headbanger.

(The word counter on my screen says I’m at 250-ish words now. Okay, plowing on…)

This morning, at work, while I was waiting for the coffee machine to piss coffee into my coffee cup, a lady pulled a jar of fruit salad from the fridge and began forking out some fruit chunks into a small bowl. Another lady walked in and was like, “What’s that?”

“It’s fruit salad,” the lady with the jar and the fork said. “I make one big jar every week so I can have fruit every morning for breakfast.”

Good idea, lady.

(A beat.)

There is a thunderstorm roaring outside as I write. The word counter is now showing 350 words ish. Okay, not bad.

For the rest of the week: I may or may not go to an emo party, I may or may not swim with a friend, and I will for sure show up to that one skincare appointment that I had to book weeks in advance.

I will also for sure finish this book I’m currently reading. It’s called Banal Nightmare by Halle Butler and it’s about people, mostly thirty-somethings, who live in a Midwestern college town and who are absolutely deranged. The book is funny as fuck – and I say “as fuck” instead of “AF” because yes, I need to hit that word count – but seriously. It’s been a while since I had to put a book down just so I could pause and laugh out loud. Hilarious!

Anyway, that’s it for the night.

Stay safe, and I hope you enjoy the rest of your week.
